WHAT, WHY AND WHO

YOUR PEO PRIMER

Better benefits. Greater compliance. Lower costs. Professional employer organizations (PEOs) have a lot to offer—when they're the right fit. And, for many growing companies, they can be a big win. How? Let's go through the Ws.

WHAT?

A PEO is a company dedicated to payroll, benefits and other HR services. The relationship looks a lot like outsourcing, but with a legal twist. You enter into a co-employment arrangement, so your workers are (technically speaking) employees of both companies.

That may sound like a lot to get your head around, but in reality, the PEO just takes care of the HR duties and you run your company. They don't hire, fire, review or recommend. They simply manage the HR compliance and admin.

WHY?

  • Benefits through scale. One of the best reasons to consider a PEO is that it puts your employees into a larger benefit pool. You can offer far more competitive, Fortune 500-level benefits as part of a 150,000-member pool than you can as a company of 10 or 60 employees.

  • Interstate compliance. If you have remote or distributed workers, a PEO ensures payroll compliance down to the municipality. Do you know your way around the Bay Area's multidimensional minimum wage landscape? Probably not. But a PEO will.

  • Cost savings. PEOs charge a per-employee fee each month, which can be significantly offset by their group purchasing power, helping you pay less for better insurance. They can also save you money on workers comp, managing unemployment claims and garnishments, and day-to-day HR tasks.

WHO (should fly solo)?

  • Companies with high turnover or in high-risk industries may not see the same benefits and savings as other groups. It's worth running the numbers.

  • At a certain size, you'll reach a break-even point at which a PEO no longer makes good business sense. That's different for each company, depending upon the kind of work you do, where your employees work, and so on.

Creative Workforce Solutions has helped several clients transition out of PEOs at the right time, ensuring that they were ready to take on their own HR, payroll, and benefits administration.

How can we help?

Full disclosure, Creative Workforce Solutions has been with a PEO for 16 years. Even though we clearly have HR expertise in house, exceptional health coverage and benefit options allow us to keep our small-but-mighty team happy.
